If your knee aches going downstairs, swells after exercise, or has been grinding for months you’re in the right place. Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints we treat. The knee is a complex joint that bears significant load during walking, running, and daily activity and problems here are often driven by factors elsewhere in the lower limb, particularly the hip and foot.

What causes knee pain?

We commonly treat patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner’s knee), osteoarthritis, meniscal irritation, IT band syndrome, patellar tendinopathy, ligament sprains (MCL, LCL), and referred pain from the hip or lower back. Sports-related knee injuries are also a significant part of our caseload.

Osteopathic treatment and rehabilitation for knee pain

Our approach begins with a full biomechanical assessment of the knee, hip, and foot. Many knee problems are driven by hip weakness or abnormal foot mechanics treating the knee in isolation without addressing these factors leads to incomplete recovery.
Treatment combines osteopathic techniques, targeted exercise prescription, and shockwave therapy to support recovery and manage tendon-related conditions. Where weight-bearing exercise is too painful, we can provide alternative rehabilitation approaches tailored to each patient’s needs.

FAQ

Common questions about
knee pain treatment.

Something else on your mind? We’re happy to help.
Can osteopathy help knee osteoarthritis?
We can’t reverse arthritic changes but significantly reduce pain and improve movement by addressing biomechanical loading patterns that accelerate wear. Many patients with knee OA avoid surgery through osteopathic treatment and exercise.
Not usually. Most knee pain is assessed clinically. If we suspect a significant injury such as an ACL tear or meniscal damage we will refer you for an MRI and work alongside your GP or specialist.
Can osteopathy help knee osteoarthritis?

Yes osteopathy can improve mobility, reduce pain, and maintain function in knee OA. Combined with appropriate exercise, it can significantly improve quality of life.

With appropriate treatment and load management, most patellofemoral pain improves within 6–12 weeks. The key is addressing the hip and foot mechanics driving it.

No we can assess most knee conditions clinically. We’ll advise if we think imaging would be helpful.

Acute ligament sprains recover in 4–8 weeks. Runner’s knee usually resolves in 4–6 sessions. Osteoarthritis requires ongoing management. We give you a clear timeline at your first appointment.

Yes. MDOsteo is recognised by Aviva, AXA, Cigna, Vitality, WPA, Simply Health and Health Shield. Cover varies check with your insurer. We provide receipts and treatment notes for your claim.
