What is osteopathy and how does it work?
Osteopathy is a regulated form of manual therapy based on the principle that the body’s structure and function are interrelated. Osteopaths use hands on techniques to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal problems, improving movement, reducing pain, and supporting the body’s natural healing processes.
How is osteopathy different from physiotherapy or chiropractic?
All three are regulated manual therapy professions. Osteopaths take a whole body approach, assessing how different areas interact and contribute to your symptoms. Physiotherapy tends to focus more on exercise rehabilitation; chiropractic focuses primarily on spinal adjustments. Many patients find osteopathy particularly effective because we treat the cause, not just the site of pain.
What should I wear?
Comfortable, loose fitting clothing is ideal. Depending on the area being treated, you may be asked to remove or adjust your clothing. We always ensure you are comfortable and maintain your dignity throughout.
How many sessions will I need?
This varies depending on the nature and duration of your problem. Most acute conditions respond well within 3–6 sessions. Chronic or complex conditions may require a more structured programme. We always give you a realistic timeline after your first assessment.
Is osteopathy available on the NHS?
Osteopathy is available on the NHS in some areas through referral, but access is limited. Most patients see osteopaths privately. Many health insurance policies cover osteopathy we accept Aviva, AXA, Cigna, Vitality, WPA, Bupa, Simply Health, and Health Shield.
