Clinical massage therapy
Clinical massage therapy
South London.
There’s a significant difference between a relaxation massage and clinical massage therapy. At MDOsteo, every massage session starts with an assessment of your posture, movement, and the specific tissues involved. We identify what’s tight, what’s weak, and why then treat accordingly.
Because our massage therapists work within a GOsC-registered osteopathy clinic, they have access to osteopathic input when it’s needed. If your problem warrants further assessment, imaging, or a different treatment approach, we can act on that immediately rather than sending you elsewhere.
We see patients for sports performance, injury recovery, chronic muscle tension from desk work, and post-operative rehabilitation. Whatever your reason for booking, you leave with a clear understanding of what we found and what to do next.

What we offer
Sports massage & holistic massage what we offer.
Sports Massage
Targeted work on the muscles, tendons, and soft tissues used in sport. Reduces DOMS, improves flexibility, and maintains tissue quality through heavy training loads. Available as 60 or 90-minute sessions.
Holistic Massage
A flowing, full-body massage combining Swedish and holistic techniques to release tension, reduce stress, and restore balance. Slower-paced than sports massage, with a focus on the whole person rather than a specific complaint.
Remedial Massage
Assessment-led treatment targeting a specific injury or complaint. Uses a combination of soft tissue techniques, trigger point release, and stretching to reduce pain and restore function.
Myofascial Release
Sustained, low-load stretching of the fascial network to release restrictions that conventional massage cannot reach. Particularly effective for widespread tension patterns and post-surgical adhesions.
Trigger Point Therapy
Sustained pressure on specific tender points within a muscle that are causing referred pain elsewhere. Often resolves chronic pain patterns that have not responded to other treatment.
Post-Event Recovery
Lighter, circulatory techniques to flush metabolic waste, reduce soreness, and accelerate recovery after a race, match, or high-intensity training block. Typically 45–60 minutes.

We advise on frequency based on your training load, presentation, and goals. No obligation to rebook but most patients find a regular maintenance schedule makes a significant difference.

Why choose clinical massage
Massage at an osteopathy clinic the difference it makes.
Assessment first
Every session starts with a brief postural and movement assessment. We identify what is actually tight, what is weak, and what is compensating so we treat the right thing in the right way.
Osteopathic backup
If your therapist identifies something that needs osteopathic assessment, imaging, or shockwave therapy, we can act on it immediately. No need to book elsewhere or start again with a new practitioner.
Exercise prescription
Massage releases tension exercise stops it coming back. We provide specific home exercises from the first session to address the postural and movement patterns that are causing your problem.
Sports massage vs spa massage: A spa massage is designed to relax you during the session. Clinical sports massage is designed to change something. The depth, technique, and sequencing are selected to address a specific presentation not to provide a pleasant experience for its own sake. That said, good clinical massage should feel productive, not punishing.

FAQ
Common questions about
massage therapy South London.
Not sure which type of massage is right for you? Call us we’re happy to advise before you book.
What is the difference between sports massage and deep tissue massage?
Sports massage targets specific muscle groups used in sport or repetitive activity. Deep tissue massage works on the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue for chronic tension and pain. At MDOsteo we draw on both approaches and tailor each session to your needs and presentation.
How often should I have a sports massage?
Active athletes typically benefit from massage every 2–4 weeks during training. For injury recovery or chronic muscle tension, weekly sessions initially are more effective. We advise on the right frequency at your first appointment.
Will sports massage be painful?
Sports and deep tissue massage can cause some discomfort when working on tense or injured tissue — often described as a productive discomfort that brings relief afterwards. We work within your tolerance throughout. Some soreness for 24–48 hours is normal after a deep session.
What is the benefit of having massage at an osteopathy clinic?
Our massage therapists work within a clinical environment with direct access to osteopathic assessment. If your massage therapist identifies something that needs further assessment or a different approach, it can be acted on immediately. We also combine massage with exercise prescription where relevant.
Is sports massage covered by health insurance?
Some policies cover massage delivered as part of a clinical treatment plan. We recommend checking with your insurer. MDOsteo is recognised by Aviva, AXA Health, Cigna, Vitality, WPA, Simply Health and Health Shield.
Do I need a GP referral?
No referral needed. Book directly at any of our three South London clinics — Wallington, Morden or Sutton. Same-day appointments are often available.
What does a holistic massage involve?
A holistic massage at MDOsteo uses Swedish and holistic techniques in a flowing, full-body sequence. Sessions are slower-paced and focus on relaxation, stress reduction, and balance. A brief postural check at the start means we can target areas of particular tension.
What is the difference between sports and holistic massage?
Sports massage is assessment-led and targets specific muscles involved in sport or repetitive work. It is typically firmer and more focused. Holistic massage uses slower, flowing techniques over the whole body, focusing on the whole person rather than a specific complaint.
