What Is MSK Hydrotherapy
Rehabilitation that works with your body
MSK hydrotherapy uses the unique properties of warm water — buoyancy, resistance, and hydrostatic pressure — to enable movement and exercise that would be painful or impossible on dry land.
At MDOsteo Sutton, our hydrotherapy sessions are designed and delivered by qualified osteopaths with specialist training in aquatic rehabilitation. This is clinical, evidence-informed practice — not a spa treatment.
Every course begins with a full osteopathic assessment so your programme is built around your specific diagnosis, capacity, and goals — not a generic protocol.
First appointment includes:
Full Osteopathic Assesment
Water-based treatment session
Personalised rehab programme
Home exercise guidance
CONDITIONS WE TREAT
What can hydrotherapy help with?
Our MSK hydrotherapy programme is suitable for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. Unsure if it’s right for you? Call us for a free consultation.
Osteoarthritis
Hip, knee, and spinal OA. Warm water reduces pain and stiffness while allowing gentle joint mobilisation and strengthening.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Hip/knee replacement, ligament repair, or spinal surgery. Enables earlier, safer rehabilitation before full weight-bearing is advised.
Sports Injury
Muscle tears, tendon injuries, stress fractures. Maintain fitness and tissue conditioning while protecting the injury site.
Chronic Back & Neck Pain
Disc conditions, facet joint pain, and chronic spinal pain benefit from the decompressive effect of buoyancy alongside core stabilisation.
Fibromyalgia & Chronic Pain
Warm water can reduce pain hypersensitivity and allow movement and exercise that is otherwise too painful to attempt.
Hypermobility & Joint Instability
Water’s natural resistance makes it ideal for building muscular support around hypermobile joints — safely and progressively.
Frozen Shoulder & Impingement
Buoyancy-assisted movement allows the shoulder to be exercised through ranges that gravity makes near-impossible on land.
Neurological MSK Conditions
MS, Parkinson’s, and stroke recovery — warmth and buoyancy support movement quality, balance, and coordination safely.
Ankylosing Spondylitis
NICE-recommended for inflammatory spinal conditions. We work alongside your rheumatology team for safe, complementary care.

01
Initial Assessment
A full osteopathic assessment of your condition, history, and goals. We confirm hydrotherapy is right for you and design your programme.
02
Programme Design
Sessions planned around your specific condition and targets. We set clear milestones and progress markers from the start.

03
Progress & Transition
As you improve, we load your exercise progressively and integrate land-based rehabilitation – working full, independent function.
The Science
Why water makes the difference
90%
Reduction in joint loading at chest-depth water compared to standing on land.
↑40%
Greater range of movement achieved in water versus land-based therapy at equivalent pain levels
2 - 3×
Earlier commencement of rehabilitation post-surgery possible with hydrotherapy
Buoyancy reduces joint load
Water supports your body weight, dramatically reducing compression on damaged joints and allowing exercise that would otherwise be impossible.
Hydrostatic pressure reduces swelling
Even pressure across the body assists lymphatic drainage and reduces joint swelling — speeding up tissue recovery.
Warmth relieves pain and muscle spasm
Our pool is maintained at 33–36°C, relaxing muscle tension and reducing pain sensitivity before rehabilitation exercise begins.
Water resistance builds strength safely
360° resistance proportional to force applied — building muscle without impact, without the risk of overload.
Osteopath-led throughout
Every session is designed and delivered by a GOsC-registered osteopath — with full clinical accountability and continuity of care.

FAQS
Common Questions
Do I need to be able to swim?
Not at all. Hydrotherapy is conducted in a shallow therapeutic pool — not a lap pool. You will be in the water with your osteopath at all times, and all exercises are done standing, floating with support, or holding the pool rail.
Is hydrotherapy available at all MDOsteo clinics?
No – our hydrotherapy service is currently exclusive to our Sutton clinic (Sutton Inclusion Centre, Northspur Rd, SM1 2BF). Patients travelling from Morden and Wallington are welcome. Contact us to discuss cross-site care coordination.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on your condition and goals. After your initial assessment, your osteopath will give you a realistic indication of programme length. Many patients see meaningful improvement within 6–8 sessions; complex or chronic conditions may need a longer programme.
Will my health insurance cover it?
Is it suitable after surgery?
Yes — hydrotherapy can enable earlier rehabilitation than land-based therapy post-surgery. However, any wounds must be fully healed and your surgeon must have approved water immersion. We will liaise with your surgical team to ensure the timing is right.
What should I bring?
A swimsuit or swim shorts, a towel, and any relevant medical letters or imaging. Changing facilities are available at our Sutton clinic. If you have specific access requirements, please let us know when booking.
How much does it cost?
Your first appointment (full assessment + treatment) is £70. Return appointments are £60. Health insurance billing available with most major providers.
